This class welcomes hand builders and wheel throwers alike as both methods will be taught. Beginners will receive a solid foundation of techniques, working at their own pace. Teacher demonstrations will be split between basic skills for beginners and more specialized skills for advanced students. One on one teacher and student interaction facilitates assessment of abilities and brings about expansion and refinement of student skills. Proper application of glazes and other decorative techniques will round out the instruction. Our session will end with a potluck brunch-a great way to use and display work made in class.

FUNCTIONAL POTTERY

Experience the satisfaction of centering clay on the potter's wheel and the pleasure of refining your skills to make pottery that you and your family can enjoy. This class will focus on using the potter's wheel to make functional pottery. Basic wheel throwing techniques will be demonstrated and students will learn to throw bowls, cylinders and related forms. Advanced students will concentrate on working in a series and incorporating design elements that identify a set through form and decorative detail. Glaze and slip application will be taught. The class is open to students of all experience levels. We will conclude with a pot-luck supper served in pottery made during the course.

CERAMICS
DAVID FRANK

In this class I will teach students how to make pottery in a number of ways, both hand built and thrown. We will throw pots on the wheel that aren't round, slab build pots that aren't square, and glaze all of the work using color and pattern to make the pots sing with excitement. I will show a number of techniques that allow for the easy and expressive construction of pottery forms. No experience is necessary.

CERAMIC SCULPTURE

This class is for anyone who wants to work sculpturally in clay, taking full advantage of everything that a ceramics studio can offer. Students at all levels will be introduced to ways of experimenting, working and thinking as sculptors, as well as techniques for constructing forms, building surfaces and firing. Class is open to all levels of experience. Students with a background in wheelwork may want to explore hand building skills to use in conjunction with their thrown forms.

INTERMEDIATE CERAMICS: DEVELOPING TECHNIQUES

Intermediate level/prerequisite: one semester of ceramics at GAC. Course will be divided between hand building and wheel throwing, with demonstrations. Students wishing to work in one or the other may devote their entire time to their favorite techniques. The instructor will present demonstrations for all levels. Students may work at their own skill level and advance at their own rate as they become acquainted with the range of clay processes available. Glazing and surface techniques will be emphasized and expanded upon for those who are ready.

POTS FOR THE GARDEN

This session will focus on wheel thrown and altered, stoneware objects for the home garden. We'll begin with bird baths, bird feeders, and Asian style lanterns (Japanese in particular). Techniques will be centered on making larger objects from the skill level of each student and increasing their ability to manage more clay on or off the wheel; also, how to handle the glazing of a large object. New glazes will be introduced related to how we would want to blend in with natural surroundings, or oppose the colors or shapes in the landscape.

BASICS AND BEYOND

This class will be a comprehensive survey of hand building and wheel throwing, with an emphasis on form, function, and development of personal style. Beginners are welcome and will learn all the basics of forming and glazing. Intermediate and advanced students will be challenged to work toward more refined products on the wheel and to throw more difficult forms like plates, lidded containers, teapots, etc. Each class will include demonstrations and access to the resources of the GAC pottery studio.

FUN WITH GLAZES

This is a four-week class that will spend the first week making a large number of simple forms out of clay. Then, the class will focus for the remaining time on glazing the forms. We will be using a variety of different methods, which include: homemade under glaze pencils, stamps, slips, and stenciling to name just a few. Beginner to advanced.
