SHIRRET RUGMAKING: LUXURY CONFETTI CARPETS FROM FABRIC SCRAPS
workshop [workshop]

LADY MCCRADY
Tuesday-Wednesday, January 20-21
6:30pm-9:00pm

Colorful fabric scraps + a special shirring crochet hook + bright cotton cord are all you need to make Shirrét heirloom tapestry rag rugs. Quilters, Rug Hookers, Knitters, Needleworkers, Crocheters: Shirret makes substantial works of art in colorful patterns, while at the same time expressing your own artistic style. The special needle bastes crinkles of fabric together-and the hook crochets them. You get a thick, reversible American rug. Crochét ShiRRéT jewel-like rug squares, rounds, ovals and patchwork will last 100 years and more. There is no sewing: the gathered fabric edges create the reversible design surface. Stitching is loose and relaxing-the piece is blocked and "felted" to create tight, uniform stitches. Prerequisite: Fluent crochet chain and double crochet stitches. Take Gypsy Artist Crochet if you're a beginner, or visit crochet.org. Supplies: Bring medium-weight wool, cotton, old clothes + scissors. All supplies available $5-$17 (special needle is $10) in class, and from www.shirret.com.

Exercises for experimentation with color will be introduced, and participants will be encouraged to look at color in new ways. Each will leave with new ideas and a list of challenges to take home and try on their own.
