Learn through demonstration, discussion, one on one and hands on, how to create works of art made from metal. From jewelry to small sculpture, students will be introduced to tools and techniques to manipulate copper, brass and silver. Students will learn sawing, filing, cold connections, soldering, surface textures, forming, fabricating, stone setting finishing and more. Creativity and design will lead the student to one or several pieces of art work. This class is offered to the beginner as well as the more advanced student. Each will be guided according to skill and time. Please be sure to attend the first class and bring a note book and writing utensil. Fee payable with tuition $25.00

TOOL MAKING FOR

This workshop will introduce the student to making a few of their own tools. You will understand grinding to shape, finishing, polishing, and selecting metal for tools. Tools are very expensive, but....armed with some concrete nails and some old dinged up hammers you can make chasing and stamping tools and shape hammers into formed and polished metalsmithing hammers as well as making your hammer into a texturing tool. Not to mention re-shaping purchased hammers to suit your needs. Some items will be available for purchase and a supply list of suggested item to bring will be sent following enrollment.

SETTING STONES IN
PRECIOUS METAL CLAY

Take your PMC designs to the next level! Add color and brilliance to your pieces by learning to set natural and lab-grown stones in PMC. Learn which stones can be fired in the kiln, and how to flush-set stones to fire in PMC-3. Learn the special considerations for bezel setting stones in PMC using fine-silver wire, PMC-3, and pre-formed setting. Demonstrations or discussion of the slip-syringe for setting, prong setting, and channel setting will be included as time permits. Kiln firing fee payable with tuition. Materials fee includes sufficient PMC-3, supplies, and handouts to complete class projects. Faceted and cabochon stones, fine silver wire, pre-formed settings and additional PMC will be available for purchase at the workshop. Prerequisite: at least one other PMC class or workshop. Basic PMC tools, including portable work-surface, are required and will not be provided. Materials fee* of approx. $75.00 is payable at class. *materials fee is subject to change with the metals market. Fee payable with tuition $8.00

RING MAKING WITH PRECIOUS METAL CLAY workshop [workshop]

This amazing material opens the world of metal to people who haven't yet mastered traditional silversmithing. Participants will be taught some of the many options in handling this remarkable material and turn a simple clay into beautiful pure silver, while learning forming, firing and finishing their creations. LOST WAX CASTING workshop [workshop]

Lost wax casting is a method where a wax form is made, stabilized in a plaster like mold, the wax is melted out in a kiln, metal is forced into the cavity, the mold is washed away and you are left with your work of art. Learn various types of wax, methods of constructing works out of wax, and basic method of steam casting. Students will learn through demonstration and hands-on experience from wax to finished piece. Basic metals experience is helpful. Those with no metalsmithing experience will be guided to construct waxes that will not require technical skill so as to keep the focus of the class. Fee payable with tuition $25.00
