STONE CARVING

DARRELL PETIT
Eight Wednesdays, beginning January 14
1:00pm-4:00pm

This class will give students a hands-on learning experience of creating sculpture from indigenous Stony Creek Granite. The class will start with a field trip to tour the historic Stony Creek Granite Quarry. Each of the following classes will introduce students to the process of working the granite: drilling, splitting with traditional wedges and feathers, roughing out the sculpture with rifting tools, hand working stone with hammer and chisel, and hand polishing to smooth the stone. There will be class demonstrations, handouts, Stony Creek geological information, notice of current stone sculpture exhibits, sculptors' views of their work and brief slide presentations each week showing sculptors at work in quarries around the world. The class will take a field trip to the Stone Sculpture Garden in Milford, CT. The basis of the class will be that students and teacher participate in the fundamental exercise of working granite to create sculpture with a traditional hammer and chisel. Materials list provided.

Tuition $336.00
Members $288.00
