New Classes This Fall at Guilford Art Center

The Fall 2008 schedule of classes at Guilford Art Center is featuring a wide selection of short-term classes for adults and children. In addition to the semester-long classes the Center always offers, this Fall student can choose from a number of four or five week classes in basketry, drawing knitting and painting. New for kids is a series called "Fun on Fridays," a seroes pf three-week session in a huge variety of media, from "Stories and Art From Around the World" to "Art to Wear."

"The idea of offering shorter classes is to encourage people to try an artform they might be interested in without having to make a huge time commitment to a 10-week semester," says GAC executive director Jean Perkins. "This way you can learn a skill, create some art, and decide if you'd like to go on to study more intensively in a future class. Or you may just want to take a short class for the fun of it."

A weekend workshop in Illustrating Children's Books will offer the chance to work with Jamison Odone, an artist and author and protégé of Maurice Sendak. Clay Monotypes makes ceramics come alive in a new way: as a matrix for creating limited edition prints. Basic Mural Design translates your ideas onto the walls of your own home. In the Fiber Arts, students can explore weekend workshops in Marbling on Fabric and Paper and Embellishing Fiber with Glass and Silver-creating your own glass and metal objects. Weekend Hinge Sampler will help jewelery students to get their work to move and articulate in new ways, while painters will learn to work in series, a la Monet and Cezanne in A Landscape Chronicle. Or create your own photographic heirloom in Artful Family Tree.
